My friend and I came by for some South Indian food to celebrate Diwali.
We dropped by Sunday around 6 pm and only a couple tables were occupied, though it got busier as we were eating.
The menu is fully vegetarian and focuses on South Indian dishes like vada, dosa, and uthappam, though they have offer some curries as well.
My friend and I shared the thali ($15.95) and the Udupi combo ($14.95), which comes with either dosa/uthappam and idli + medhu vada. We got the masala dosa for the combo.
The combo was good. There was a generous amount of potato filling inside the dosa, and we enjoyed both the vada and idli with the sambar. The curries in the thali were a bit hit and miss, as they usually are. My favorites were the green bean curry and the potato curry.
I find the portions here a bit smaller than other South Indian places. My friend was full after the meal, but I wasn't fully satisfied and ended up snacking afterwards to get full. -

One of the best Indian Chaat places in the Bay Area if you ask me. Even Udupi Palace's Thali plate with its assortment of curries was fantastic!

Whether you order to go or dine in, the service is always outstandingly quick here! Udupi Palace is probably one of the best places to get dosa in Berkeley. Their combos are always quite generously portioned, so if you're a curious eater like me it's good to get lots of dishes to share amongst friends/family here! On my own a single combo can actually last a couple of meals. I always find myself craving their idly... a hidden gem in the Berkeley food scene.

This was SO good that my dining companion couldn't stop eating long enough for me to get a good photo! Look, I'm not an expert on South Indian food, so I can't say if it's authentic. However, it's my favorite cuisine and I eat and cook it a lot. These flavors were distinct, complex and layered. We got the   Thali and the onion Dosa. We loved having so many different dishes to sample. The dosa are some of the best I've ever had. There was tons of food, all of it delicious. Our server was attentive and patient. I can't wait to go again!
